CHARTER SCHOOLS: FIGHTING FOR CHILDREN
“Waiting for Superman” is a 2010 documentary about the lives of five Harlem and Bronx families in the high stakes lottery for access to New York City’s best charter schools. Thomas Sowell in his latest book, Charter Schools and Their Enemies, de- fends charter schools against the teacher’s unions, politicians and liberal educators threatening to dismantle their success.
Our October meeting brings us our own Colorado charter school expert, Bob Schaffer, as our luncheon speaker. Bob is the Headmaster of Liberty Common School, a charter elementary junior-high, and high-school system in Fort Collins which is ranked among Colorado’s top performing academic institutions.
Among Bob’s numerous credentials are Chairman of the Leadership Program of the Rockies, past Chairman of the Colo- rado State Board of Education and past Director of Colorado League of Charter Schools. From 1997 until early 2003 he was Colorado’s Fourth District Congressman in the U.S. House of Representatives.
He was also a Colorado State Senator for nine years, being the youngest person at 25 to serve the State Senate.
Born in Cincinnati, he graduated from the University of Dayton. He received an honorary doctorate in Management from Colorado Technical University. Bob and his wife, Dr. Maureen Schaffer (electrical engineer), have five children and six grandchildren. Bob and Maureen are founders of the Liberty Common School and Traut Core Knowledge School.
Don’t miss Bob’s interesting insights into the challenges and successes charter schools have in today’s political environment.
