BRW May Dinner

Dr. Debora Scheffel, Dean of School of Education at College of Undergraduate Studies, Colorado Christian University (CCU)



Dr. Debora Scheffel, the Dean of the School of Education in the College of Undergraduate Studies at Colorado Christian University (CCU) and a Colorado State Board of Education member from 2019 to January 2025 will be our May speaker.


Dr. Scheffel was unanimously appointed to fill the seat of Pam Mazanec in 2018 and going on to defeat Democrat Tim Krug by 61 percent for the following six year term.


Dr. Scheffel has an extensive background in education, including the Director of Academic Assessment at two universities and a visiting scholar at the United State Air Force Academy. Her academic background includes a Ph.D. in Communication


Sciences and Communicative Disorders (Northwestern University) and an M.A. in Special Education (University of Denver). Her research includes the relationship of childhood disabilities to reading and oral language development. Her B.S. degree is from Bob Jones University.



During her tenure at CCU, the National Council of Teacher Quality named the elementary and secondary programs in CCU’s School of Education as the top programs in the State of Colorado and in the 98th percentile of all education programs nationwide.


Dr. Scheffel represented the 4th Congressional District while on the school board which includes 22 counties or portions in the Eastern Plains and the cities of Longmont, Greeley and Castle Rock. The State Board of Education appoints the commissioner of education, sets state standards, hears charter school appeals, grants waivers, oversees teacher licensure and administers grants approved by the legislature.
